The Laboratory of Animal Metabolism uses dairy calves as a study model, conducting research on the effects of nutrition on the transition from metabolism of pre-ruminant animal to functional ruminant.
The experimental area counts different feeding systems of calves, with 45 individual shelters, 18 suspended stalls and an automatic feeding station that serves 25 animals. In addition, it has an animal management center and food preparation area. The laboratory itself has Centrifuges / hematocrit; Biochemical self-analyzer; microplate reader (ELISA); Spectrophotometer; microscope, BODs, stove; Analytical balance; Freezers / refrigerators. This infrastructure allows the conduction of diverse experiments and analysis of blood metabolites, such as glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate, free fatty acids, total protein; besides hormones like cortisol, T3 and T4.
